The Anti-Starling Triple Suet Cage Feeder is designed to give smaller backyard birds better access to suet while helping reduce access for starlings and larger birds. Its cage openings allow chickadees, nuthatches, finches, and smaller woodpeckers to feed through the sides, while all woodpeckers can also cling and feed from below. Larger woodpeckers that do not fit through the mesh openings can still access the suet from underneath.

No feeder can completely outsmart determined birds, but this design helps give your favorite backyard visitors an advantage.

With space for three full suet cakes, this feeder offers large capacity so you can spend less time refilling. The lift-off top makes reloading simple, while the recycled poly-lumber frame and powder-coated wire mesh are built for durable outdoor use season after season.

Eco-friendly, durable, and easy to maintain.

Eco-Friendly & Durable

Our poly lumber is crafted from High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), an eco-friendly material made from recycled post-consumer plastics like milk jugs and detergent bottles. Each piece is thoroughly cleaned and purified to over 99% pure HDPE before being transformed into strong, long-lasting board stock—perfect for creating durable, weather-resistant birding products.

Why Choose Poly Lumber

Poly lumber is an eco-friendly, non-toxic material made from recycled plastics—designed to last for years without the maintenance or risks that come with wood. It’s one of the safest and most durable materials you can choose for your backyard birds.

Benefits of Poly Lumber:

  • Safe & Non-Toxic: Unlike pressure-treated or painted wood, poly lumber contains no harmful chemicals, pesticides, or finishes that could endanger birds.
  • Non-Porous & Easy to Clean: The smooth, sealed surface won’t absorb moisture or bacteria, helping prevent the spread of diseases like salmonella.
  • Weather & Rot Resistant: Stands up to rain, snow, and sun without cracking, warping, or fading.
  • Low Maintenance: No sealing, painting, or staining—just occasional cleaning to keep it looking new.
  • Eco-Friendly: Made from recycled plastic, reducing landfill waste and helping protect the environment.
  • Built to Last: Resists moisture, insects, and mildew, providing years of reliable use for both you and your feathered visitors.

I have a couple starlings who are willing and able to hang upside down to get to the suet, but I think when I change over to plain suet they will stop.
I used a cap from some Olly gummy vitamins on the bottom to lift the suet out of their reach, and it stops them under the cap.
This feeder is very sturdy. I had some 70mph winds come through a few days ago and it was completely undamaged.
The little songbirds are really active at it so far. This is my 4th feeder trying to get rid of starlings, and it's the best so far by a lot.

Lauren, thank you so much for the detailed review.

We’re glad to hear the feeder is holding up well and that the songbirds are already active on it. Some starlings are surprisingly determined around suet, so we appreciate you sharing the cap idea to help keep the suet lifted farther out of reach.

That setup may limit access from underneath for woodpeckers, but if your goal is mostly feeding the smaller songbirds, it sounds like a clever workaround.

It means a lot to hear this has been the best option you’ve tried so far.

Great descriptions and illustrations of feeders. Quick response to any questions I had.

The bird feeder is well made and very attractive . The issue I had it is not starling or squirrel proof. I had it up for 5 days and all 3 suets were gone by the end of the fifth day eaten by starlings and squirrels. I did have a few Downey woodpeckers visit it also.

Thank you for your feedback, and I’m glad to hear you found the feeder well made.

I’m sorry to hear about the trouble with starlings and squirrels. This feeder is designed to discourage starlings, but it isn’t completely starling-proof, especially in areas with heavy pressure. Placement also plays a big role. When hung from a tree or where squirrels can easily access it, they will almost always find a way in.

The visits from Downy woodpeckers are exactly what this feeder is built for, so that part is encouraging.

If the setup isn’t working well in your location, we’re still happy to help with a return. Just reach out to support@birdhaven.com
and we’ll take care of you.

This suet feeder is of excellent quality. Very impressed. It only took 3 days for the woodpeckers to find it and figure it out. The starlings have tried to no avail and the poor squirrels sit in the nearby tree trying to figure a way to get to it. Hopefully they will not prevail!

Love this suet feeder. It keeps the bully birds out and the woodpeckers love it. I even have a Pileated that uses it!

So impressed With this suet feeder. I’ve been over run with starlings fighting off my woodpeckers from my suet feeders. When I opened this I could instantly tell it was very well made. I love how easy it is to fill. When I put it out there was a day or so of learning curve where the birds just landed on it and didn’t go in. The downy woodpecker figured it out first and could easily and safely fit inside. The larger woodpecker’s took a little longer but soon were hanging on the bottom. Very well thought out. I’m very happy with this purchase.

Look at my feeder today - I see all varieties of woodpeckers throughout the day… And I have not seen one starling in my yard in five days…
I am saving money on suet - this new birdfeeder will pay for itself in about two weeks
Love it !
I’m t is a huge printed woodpecker -
Am not able to send a picture …

can't say enough about BirdHaven Shop! Bought the starling proof
cage so our native birds ie wood peckers, flickers, blue birds, etc could dine in peace without harrassment from the starlings.
Shipped extremely fast! Highly recommend!

Keeps starlings from rapidly devouring suet, but allows them and the more welcome birds including pileated woodpeckers access from the bottom until I have to push the remaining suet down to reach the bottom. Also the access lid for replacing suet just lays in the recess cut for it. It could fly off in the wind or be lifted off by a marauding squirrel or other animal. I have secured it with long silicone bands, but wish it were designed to be more secure.

Thank you so much for the detailed feedback.

I’m glad to hear the feeder is helping slow the starlings down, though I understand your concerns about bottom access and the lid. You’re right that some determined birds can still feed from underneath, especially if the suet sits against the bottom of the cage.

We’re actively looking at ways to improve this feeder, including better protection around the suet and a more secure lid, while still keeping it usable for woodpeckers and other cling-feeding birds.

We appreciate you sharing your experience and the workaround you used.

So the Starling proof suet feeder is not
Starling proof. I had to cover the bottom of the feeder with hardware cloth as the starlings and blackbirds were hanging from the bottom and
eating most of the suet.
FYI, these birds can and do hang upside down,
Also they can reach through the sides of the feeder and chip away at the suet until most of it is gone. Clearly the feeder needs to be wider to stop the birds from getting at the suet.
On the plus side, the feeder is heavy duty and well made, but prepare to have to use hardware cloth on the bottom. Also be ready for the smaller song birds to be driven away by Starlings and Blackbirds. Although well made, for the price of the feeder I am disappointed in the results.

Thank you for the detailed feedback, and I’m sorry the feeder didn’t perform as well as expected in your yard.

You’re right that some starlings and blackbirds can hang upside down and work at the suet from the bottom or sides. The feeder is built to reduce access, but it clearly didn’t slow them down enough in your situation.

We appreciate you pointing this out. We’re actively testing improvements to help better protect the suet while still keeping the feeder usable for woodpeckers and other smaller birds.

I’m glad to hear you liked the build quality, but I completely understand the disappointment with the results.

Quality item! Well built. Looks beautiful. Love the fact it holds 3 suet cakes. Keeps the grackles and Jays away. My woodpeckers just love it!

Extremely well built with materials engineered to last! The description on the website is accurate and the product is extremely sturdy while also aesthetically pleasing. Shipping was through UPS and it arrived well ahead of when it was promised. I'm also pleased with the fact that our smaller birds now have a chance to enjoy the suet that we put out without having to compete with the starlings and redwing blackbirds that are prevalent in our area. Thank you for the care you have taken in the design and manufacture of your products!

This is a well built feeder. It is a good weight so I hung it from a tree. My main reason for rating it only three stars is that it is not starling proof and that was my main reason for buying it, as I have many regular suet feeders. The starlings in my yard would hang upside down and feed just fine on this suet from the bottom, and I had to take it down. I enjoy seeing the woodpeckers but have not found a suet feeder that will keep starlings away yet. It may very slightly slow them down from hogging a whole cake in an hour but it is nowhere near starling proof. I will say they cannot reach any from the top or sides though so that is a plus. But they also dont mind hanging upside down to get the suet.

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback and detailed review.

You’re right that some starlings become incredibly determined around suet feeders and will do just about anything to reach the food, including feeding upside down from underneath. The design helps reduce access from the sides and top, but unfortunately no suet feeder can completely stop every persistent starling.

I’m sorry it didn’t solve the issue in your yard, but we really appreciate you sharing your experience.

Its not completely starling proof as they still manage to feed from the bottom but they have a difficult time so it is definitely a distraction!

Love this feeder. Keeps bigger birds OUT! Smaller birds go right through it & woodpeckers eat from the bottom. Love that it holds THREE suet cakes at once.

Works exactly like I needed it to. Woodpeckers and nuthatches use it, starlings can't reach it. Squirrels also are left out. Biggest thing, it is so sturdy that it handles the wind while hanging in tree. Great product.

Not one starling has been able to crack the code of this suet feeder. The woodpeckers approach it from the bottom and the little birds can eat in peace.

So happy the starlings and grackles can’t get the suet!! They certainly try!!
I haven’t had it up very long, so I have not seen many little birds using it yet. But I am sure they will figure it out soon!

This feeder is a great addition to our backyard bird feeding, which includes 2 conventional single cake sized suet feeders. The bluebirds check out this one and occasionally feed from it. They actually prefer the other feeders. Starlings have figured out how to feed from the bottom of this feeder, so it's not starling proof in our yard. Those seem like significant minuses yet I love this feeder because it better supports big woodpeckers, small birds love it and they seem safer inside, and it's incredibly convenient because the suet supply lasts much longer before needing a refill. All in all, it is a great addition to an existing set of bird feeding stations, and helps to spread the birds out more for comfortable feeding.

A great product! Solid, well made and nice-looking. Serves intended purpose - to feed smaller birds and keep starlings out! Very happy with purchase. Thank you!

It’s a very well built feeder. Easy to add suet. Only had it up one day. Added some peanut butter to attract. Very cold, single digits and minimal sun, less than 6 hours here. I’m sure it will be a great addition though perhaps when the weather warms up a bit.
